Cinnamon is a pretty powerful spice that has been used medicinally around the world for a really long time! Not only does it taste great, it has a lot of health benefits! These are some notes I took from an article from one of my favourites, Dr. Axe.
According to researchers, out of 26 most popular herbs and spices, cinnamon ranks #1 in its antioxidant levels!
The benefits of cinnamon come from the bark of the tree that its grown from, the Cinnamomum tree. The bark contains different compounds which are responsible for its numerous health promoting elements- cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acis and cinnamate.
You can have cinnamon in the form of the spice or essential oil. What makes the oil a little different than the spice is the potency. The oil is highly concentrated with antioxidants.
One tablespoon of ground cinnamon contains:
4 grams of fiber
3% Vitamin K
You don’t need a lot of cinnamon to reap the benefits, just a little will do! You only need about 1/2 a teaspoon daily for it to have a positive affect on your blood sugar levels, digestion and immunity.
Here is a little info chart for you to view:
I love cinnamon and use in it more than one way! From my own experience and my own suggestions, some ways you can start incorporating cinnamon into your nutrition are:
*in your coffee– throw a dash of cinnamon into your coffee too add an even more comforting feel to that warm beverage.
*on apples– bake some apples and sprinkle some on top for a little treat
*on popcorn- air pop some plain popcorn and drizzle on some coconut oil (or a little butter) and then add some cinnamon, along with a little stevia for a sweet healthy treat.
*in your protein shake- to spice it up and change it up!
*in your yogurt and granola- a little shake or two over top can go a long way!
Now that you have some ideas, make an effort to spice some things up with in your life!
